Early diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) allow for an understanding of an individual’s strengths and challenges which facilitates entry into appropriate intervention and support services. In turn, early diagnosis can mitigate the development of difficulties in daily living associated with this neurodevelopmental disability and promote healthier outcomes. Even if individuals do not meet the criteria for a diagnosis of FASD, a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment process for those who have had prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) provides important information about learning, behaviour, and physical and mental health that will guide care and appropriate supports.

The Central Alberta FASD Clinic is for individuals aged 7 years and older who are experiencing difficulties that are suspected to be a result of prenatal exposure to alcohol. Our dedicated multidisciplinary team, comprised of a Medical Doctor, Registered Psychologist, Registered Speech-Language Pathologist, and Registered Occupational Therapist, takes on an individualized approach to best assess each person’s unique strengths and challenges. We aim to identify these and provide lifelong strategies and supports where needed.

Not all individuals exposed to alcohol during gestation have FASD.

 

We offer a requisite number of fully funded assessments, based on eligibility requirements. If there are alternative sources of funding available, these will be explored prior to internal funding.”

 

Referred individuals are strongly encouraged to have a support person, or Designated Representative, assist them through the assessment process. This support person will act as the main contact for Clinic to ensure the client completes the necessary questionnaires, arrange transportation, and attends all scheduled appointments.
